the first and last time i ever flew first class was in the summer of 2006 (after my study abroad program concluded in florence, italy). the parts of the plane in the original flight were “missing” (?????), so i stayed overnight in amsterdam. the name on my room card was inadvertently humorous.
delta hooked me up BIG TIME (first, with staying at a reeeally nice hotel in amsterdam). they upgraded my original economy ticket with first class. i had an aisle seat. there is only one seat per aisle. awesome. there is so much more leg room in first class, it’s criminal. the flight attendants are also exponentially more friendly and accomodating, but that’s what you get when you shell out the $$$$ for it. when the flight attendant kindly asked me to pull out my tray table, she put a table cloth over it! i was amazed. the plates are china and you get personalized salt/pepper shakers.
i learned a lot about living the high life (no pun intended) and a huge part of flying first class is that you EAT. a lot. everyone gets a menu and there were four courses with snacks (and by snacks i mean, fresh fruit, cheeses, and port wine) in between each meal. i’ve never eaten so much in my life, but i vowed to try everything on the menu. when i couldn’t stomach the last “snack” (a plate full of fresh fruit + a pita/gyro sandwich), i think i revealed my lack of first-classness by asking the flight attendant if i could take the food with me “because i don’t want to waste it.” the flight attendant kindly said, “oh honey, you wouldn’t BELIEVE how much food gets wasted…”
when the flight finally made it to the u.s., one of my classmates mentioned that we could hang out in the “first class lounge.” there’s a separate lounge for first class? how naive i was. these waiting areas are cleverly concealed among the airport walls. but the first class lounge in newark, n.j. was very posh. marbled floors, internet access, showers, open bar, + anything else that you want. (with marbled floors, what else would you need?!?!)
as enjoyable as it was flying first class (i couldn’t sleep on the flight from amsterdam because i was too giddy at the fact that my plane seat reclined so far back that i could see the ceiling!), i feel like the money that could be spent on these flights could be used for when you’re at the actual destination. but it was a great experience nonetheless. once in a lifetime. emphasis on the once part.

- duomo, june 2006 -
during the orientation/tour of my study abroad trip in the summer of 2006, this was my first view of the duomo.
the sight of it literally made me gasp in amazement and adoration. we were walking in a darkened alley and seeing the duomo peeking through in its beauty really was something to behold (& capture on camera!).
this picture will always remind me of that time and the feeling of being so taken by the art & beauty of architecture.
